The Treadmill Factory - 45 lbs Micro adjustable weighted vest - 45 lbs weighted vest 100-2694

The Treadmill Factory - 45 lbs Micro adjustable weighted vest - 45 lbs weighted vest 100-2694

Question: Should I Wear a Weight Vest for a Better Walking Workout?
Reader Susan writes: "I have come across some info on a weighted walking vest and wondered what you think. I was wondering about the pros and cons. It seems like a good idea."
Answer: Of all of the weights suggested for walkers, a weighted vest is probably the least likely to cause injury. The extra weight is carried where the body naturally adds on extra weight -- the torso, at the center of mass. You don't have the risk of repetitive motion injury and unnatural stress on the feet, arms or ankles you do with ankle weights or hand weights.
If you have any problems with your knees, ankles, feet, hips, it is better to weigh less when you walk, as each pound adds even more stress to those joints. If you have no aches or pains, I don't recommend against using a weighted vest, but I think there are better (or more useful) ways of achieving the same goals.

Theory #1: Burn More Calories

The more you weigh, the more calories you burn per mile. This is true, but the difference is small for any amount of weight you could comfortably add to your body. I'd rather not mess with adding weight to my body, I'd prefer to walk an extra minute to achieve the same effect. I usually wear a hydration backpack, carrying a couple of pounds of water and a couple of pounds of backpack, cell phone, wallet, etc. I don't do this to burn more calories, I carry it to have water and essentials with me on a walk of more than 30 minutes. However, a backpack has disadvantages -- the straps may be uncomfortable, and all of the weight is on your back unless you use the chest strap and belly strap to evenly distribute the weight to your hips rather than your shoulders.
Theory #2: Speed Training

A weighted vest is used in many sports for speed training. If you train with the vest, then compete without it, you will go faster. If you have already trained fully for speed and distance and achieved the best results you can, then this may be a way to get further increases in speed. But if you still have basic training to do for speed and distance, concentrate on that without adding weight.
How to Walk Faster
Walking Posture and Stride
Are You There Yet?

For most fitness walkers, I don't see a value in buying an expensive weighted vest. I'd prefer to see you walk an extra minute or two to gain the same calorie burn, or to improve your walking form so you are walking faster and packing more miles into the same time. Again, that means burning more total calories.
But You Really Want to Buy a Weight Vest

If you are still convinced this is the item for you, then be sure to try before you buy. The vest should fit well, not too tight and not loose. You don't want the weights to be swinging freely, adding strange side motions to your walking form. The weights should be evenly distributed around your torso. Look for a design in mesh or a sweat-wicking fabric with good air flow-through so you won't get sweaty and miserable. You should be able to easily add or subtract weights. The design should still work well with whatever kind of water carrier you use, if you are going to use it for walks over 30 minutes.

Horizon Elliptical Machines Provide a Total Body Workout

LinkBrowse Elliptical Machines here

It seems that people keep getting busier and busier with demands coming from all aspects of our lives. Work, family, social and community commitments, health and wellness objectives all seem to need our daily or weekly attention. With minimal time, how can we get a total body workout efficiently? One solution to consider adding to your weekly fitness routine is elliptical machines.

Elliptical Machines- Exercise Efficiently

Elliptical machines allow users to work harder and faster than other more traditional workout routines. The result is more calories burned and tighter muscle tone in less time. For those who live with hectic schedules, which seems to be everyone in today’s world, 20-30 minutes on these machines could provide the answer to your fitness goals without a significant time investment.

Whether you are looking to add a piece of equipment to your home gym, or for a fresh new routine to add when visiting your local health and fitness club, elliptical machines may be your answer.

The Benefits of Low-Impact Cardiovascular Exercise

Elliptical machines have grown in popularity due to their low-impact, cross-fitness capacities. Users can attempt multiple programs and resistance levels, adding variety to their routines. Low-impact aerobic activities put less strain on the user’s lower body, resulting in less injury or pain to some athletes. Low-impact elliptical machines offer the same cardiovascular benefits as running or walking without the pressure or strain on the legs and feet.

Resistance Training- Improving Bone Strength and Density

As adults age, one common health issue that needs to be addressed is the loss of bone density, often resulting in issues with osteoporosis. Recent studies suggest that weight-bearing exercises are effective at increasing one’s bone density. As a result, adults who engage in this type of activity experience fewer incidents of bone loss and a lower prevalence of osteoporosis than those who only focus on cardiovascular exercises.

When the resistance functions of elliptical machines are utilized, your body will experience the result of improved strength and bone density. The result while it may not result in the same outcomes in terms of physical appearance as lifting free weights, your body’s overall muscle tone and bone density will improve.

Everyone can capture the benefits of elliptical machines. Individuals of any fitness level can add this form of exercise to their weekly routines, capturing the benefits of low-impact cardiovascular exercise and bone density in less time than more traditional fitness routines.

    TESTIMONIALS

Just finished using it for the first time, bottom line, it works great. I use it for interval training in martial arts, very easy to use and change between exercises. Loud enough for me to hear when to change Thanks for your help.
    -Matt

Man, this thing is perfect...I also like the fact that it counts "sets" as well...
good job! and thanks for your help!
    -Mark

Happily, the good folks at Gymboss make an inexpensive timer expressly for this purpose.
Mine came in the mail after just a couple days, and it's perfect. It's twenty bucks, is about the size of a small pager, has just three buttons and is very simple to set up, and is configurable to just about any workout via these options:
    • You can set it to countdown once, and then repeat each time you press a button, or set it to automatically repeat without pressing anything.
    • You can set a single interval to repeat, or dual intervals of different lengths (so you can set a work interval, and a rest interval of a different time).
    • Intervals can be set down to the second.
    • The alarm can be either a soft beep, a loud beep, a vibration, or any combination of beeping and vibrating.
    • The alarm can further be set to go off for one second or ten seconds.

Furthermore, in "repeat" mode the timer will tell you how many intervals you've completed! There's nothing like the right tool for the job, and this is the right tool.

Prior to the Gymboss I was using my Timex Ironman Triathlon to time my rounds and my Tabata workouts. The main problems where:

    - the watch has no vibrate mode so I could not be used in a group class. It was also very hard to hear the beeps over my headphones when working out with my iPod.

    - the watch was sometimes hard to wear with bag gloves. Now I can simply clip the Gymboss on my waist band. I can even clip it directly on the Obi (the belt of the Karate Gi or uniform).

Thanks again for this simple product making my life better.

I bought my Gymboss at the Arnold to deal with a workout
partner that talks more than he lifts. The Gymboss is perfect. No need to be rude with this in the gym.
    Thanks a lot!

Just wanted to let you know how pleased I am with my recent purchase of my Gymboss Timer! I have been using it recently for interval training of both jump roping, and heavy bag boxing workouts. It is very easy to use. The dual timers are terrific and much better than a standard countdown time. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to have an accurate and productive workout.
    Best regards,
    Scott

WOW WOW WOW!!! I absolutely LOVE the timer. It is EXACTLY what I have been looking for!
    -Dan

Received today! Wow what service!!! Used it already and it is excellent!!!!!Rarely am I impressed with stuff but this is one neat piece of kit!!
    Thanks so much,
    -Steve

I received my Gymboss timer today and it is excellent! Smaller than I thought it would be (that's a good thing)! Easy to use, small, versatile, and ready to go whenever you are.
    Thank you,
    -James

I just want to tell you how pleased I am with this Gymboss. I never thought I'd be so proud of something so small :) It's perfect! At first I found myself thinking..."Well if it only had this, or that" but the reality is that it does
"Exactly" what it's supposed to do - time intervals. I run 3 minutes then walk 3 minutes in Dual mode. I stretch each muscle for one minute in Single mode. I circuit train with a heavy bag, punch some - rest some. I circuit train with
weights and machines to specific intervals - The Bruce Lee Workout - and with precise control of time I know I'm getting a full dose of each segment. OK I could go on but I'll stop here. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! You have a very useful product that I plan on using the rest of my life so don't go anywhere!
    -Curtis

Got the boss over the weekend and I absolutely love it. I use it for Tabata as it is a great solution to the timing problem. Love the price, too.
    -Judd

I received my GYMBOSS Timer yesterday and used it this morning. I love it!
I like using the Tabata method of training and finally both my workout partner and I could actually train at the same time without one of us having to wait while watching the clock and calling out times for the other. The dual alarm was loud enough for both of us to hear it so we could stay focused on our work and not the clock. This is really going to improve the efficiency of our workouts. Great product!
    -Steve

For a long time I have been looking for a simple timer for working out in rounds. You would think this to be a simple task, right?
Wrong. I have had a very hard time finding something simple to count rounds for me. In my numerous trips to the mall and sports stores all I could ever find were stop watches, cooking timers, or full fledged commercial gym timers. It would be pretty sweet to own a real boxing / kickboxing gym timer. With those timers you can adjust the round duration (usually 2 min. or 3 min.) and rest period (30 sec. or 1 min.). You also get a warning near the end of the round and a bell to signify the beginning and end of each round. Some even have red, yellow, and green lights to signify which period you are in.

Wow, that sounds great! Why didn't I just buy one of them? Well, one of these babies will cost about $150 - give or take a few. I am not willing to spend that kind of money on a timer until I own my own commercial gym. That is the reason I have been searching for a more simple timer - because something simple should theoretically cost less. After some more searching I found some simple round timers meant for boxing and martial arts on eBay. Still, these came with quite a price tag,
    anywhere from $60 - $100.

Finally, I found the GYMBOSS timer. This timer is exactly what I was looking for. It is small, easy to program, has the features I need, and is inexpensive at $19.95 USD.
    -Rob

Received the timer last week and it works great. The setup is easier than I thought it would be. I plan to use mostly for Tabata and that seems to set up just fine. I am a CrossFit person so this is just what I have been looking for.
    Thanks,
    Kath

I used the timer today. It was great! It helped me use
my time more efficiently and also intensified my work out by limiting the amount of break I had.

The Gymboss rocks. Seriously. Get one. I've known about this thing for a year and can't believe I didn't snag one before. Incredibly useful, and much better than a watch with an alarm and an iPod with timed MP3s. I've used both, and there's just no comparison.

I can now also be much more accurate with determining work/rest periods, as well as how many sets and/or rounds my clients and Officer Candidates have done during training and PT sessions.
