Question: Should I Wear a Weight Vest for a Better Walking Workout?Reader Susan writes: "I have come across some info on a weighted walking vest and wondered what you think. I was wondering about the pros and cons. It seems like a good idea."Answer: Of all of the weights suggested for walkers, a weighted vest is probably the least likely to cause injury. The extra weight is carried where the body naturally adds on extra weight -- the torso, at the center of mass. You don't have the risk of repetitive motion injury and unnatural stress on the feet, arms or ankles you do with ankle weights or hand weights. If you have any problems with your knees, ankles, feet, hips, it is better to weigh less when you walk, as each pound adds even more stress to those joints. If you have no aches or pains, I don't recommend against using a weighted vest, but I think there are better (or more useful) ways of achieving the same goals.Theory #1: Burn More CaloriesThe more you weigh, the more calories you burn per mile. This is true, but the difference is small for any amount of weight you could comfortably add to your body. I'd rather not mess with adding weight to my body, I'd prefer to walk an extra minute to achieve the same effect. I usually wear a hydration backpack, carrying a couple of pounds of water and a couple of pounds of backpack, cell phone, wallet, etc. I don't do this to burn more calories, I carry it to have water and essentials with me on a walk of more than 30 minutes. However, a backpack has disadvantages -- the straps may be uncomfortable, and all of the weight is on your back unless you use the chest strap and belly strap to evenly distribute the weight to your hips rather than your shoulders.Theory #2: Speed TrainingA weighted vest is used in many sports for speed training. If you train with the vest, then compete without it, you will go faster. If you have already trained fully for speed and distance and achieved the best results you can, then this may be a way to get further increases in speed. But if you still have basic training to do for speed and distance, concentrate on that without adding weight. How to Walk FasterWalking Posture and StrideAre You There Yet?For most fitness walkers, I don't see a value in buying an expensive weighted vest. I'd prefer to see you walk an extra minute or two to gain the same calorie burn, or to improve your walking form so you are walking faster and packing more miles into the same time. Again, that means burning more total calories. But You Really Want to Buy a Weight VestIf you are still convinced this is the item for you, then be sure to try before you buy. The vest should fit well, not too tight and not loose. You don't want the weights to be swinging freely, adding strange side motions to your walking form. The weights should be evenly distributed around your torso. Look for a design in mesh or a sweat-wicking fabric with good air flow-through so you won't get sweaty and miserable. You should be able to easily add or subtract weights. The design should still work well with whatever kind of water carrier you use, if you are going to use it for walks over 30 minutes.

The "basic" step involves stepping first one foot then the other on top of the step and then stepping the first foot and then the other back to the floor. A "right basic" would involve stepping right foot up, then the left, then returning to the floor alternating right then left. Many instructors of step will switch immediately between different moves, for example between a right basic and a left basic without any intervening moves, forcing people to "tap" their foot instead of shifting weight. However, one form of step is called tap-free or smooth step in which feet always alternate without the ambiguous "taps" that can make learning step difficult for beginners. This requires a bit of foresight and planning by the instructor in order to insert a transitional or switching move that maintains the natural alternating weight shift akin to walking. For example, from a series of right basics one may insert a "knee up" (which involves stepping up and lifting the knee and returning the lifted leg to the ground, thereby switching feet) and then continuing to a left basic. However, this requires planning and the extra beats required for the transition move.Common Moves include:Basic StepCorner kneeRepeater kneeT-StepOver-the-TopLungesV-StepStraddle DownL-StepSplit StepI-Step

Summary of Foam Rollers:
Foam rollers offer many of the same benefits as a sports massage, without the big price tag.The foam roller not only stretches muscles and tendons but it also breaks down soft tissue adhesions and scar tissue. By using your own body weight and a cylindrical foam roller you can perform a self-massage or myofascial release, break up trigger points, and soothe tight fascia while increasing blood flow and circulation to the soft tissues. How It WorksThe superficial fascia is a soft connective tissue located just below the skin. It wraps and connects the muscles, bones, nerves and blood vessels of the body. Together, muscle and fascia make up what is called the myofascia system. For various reasons including disuse, not enough stretching, or injuries, the fascia and the underlying muscle tissue can become stuck together. This is called an adhesion and it results in restricted muscle movement. It also causes pain, soreness and reduced flexibility or range of motion.Myofascial release is a body work technique in which a practitioner uses gentle, sustained pressure on the soft tissues while applying traction to the fascia. This technique results in softening and lengthening (release) of the fascia and breaking down scar tissue or adhesions between skin, muscles and bones.Myofascial release has also been shown to relieve various muscle and joint pains such as IT band syndrome and shin splints as well as improving flexibility and range of motion.Foam rollers are inexpensive and with a bit of experimentation you can target just about any muscle group.Shop for a Foam Roller

Success stories:
So I just got out of the Army and headed back to home sweet home in the country. I was going to the gym everyday in the Army but now the nearest gym is 45 minutes away. So I seen the Tower 200 on t.v. and decided I like the price, I should give it a try. So I get it and I’m watching the dvd and I‘m laughing thinking I'll just do the whole dvd at once. You know thinking I'm a real badass and all. Yeah well I just made it through the 11 minute workout and I’m done. The tower 200 just kicked my ass. So even though I haven’t gained 10 lbs of muscle yet, I’m sure I will pretty quick. The success in this story is that I got my gym now. It’s hanging from my closet door. Thanks Body by Jake. P.S. Randy your the champ and always will be in my eyes and all my buddies!!!"Billy – McArthur, OH"Well I would tell you, the Body by Jake Tower 200 works. I've been working out for more than 25 years and tried everything (machines/weights). I will say this - you get more tension and growth faster because of the constant resistance. It is everything and more that the advertising says, and is worth the money. You have less stress on your bones and tendons, no changing plates and the 11 minute per day absolutely is a hard workout if you apply yourself. I get size, tightness, strength and cardio all at once. There’s an imitator out now by Weider…remember you get what you pay for. I'm extremely happy and will order the accessories. Thank you Body By Jake. "Robert – Macon, GA"When I work out with the Tower 200, because of the way it is designed and the flexion in the bands, I can do about anything imaginable. My most appreciated results come from the full range of motion I can achieve with appropriate resistance all thru the range of motion, with arms or legs, standing or sitting…there is more resistance than I can imagine ever needing. I would like to extend my full appreciation to Jake, the Tower 200, and others that developed the Tower 200."Terry – Russellville, AR"You see so many commercials that try an lure you into buying products that don’t work. The Tower 200 will explode your workout routine. You will be able to train harder, get faster and get stronger every day. I never had any doubts since I got it. I can’t wait to show off my body for the summer! So do yourself a favor and order one!"Casey, Canton Ohio"My challenge and workout plan was to maintain my current weight of 200 pounds but lose body fat. I was at 17% and after working out for 10 - 30 mins. a day, five days a week, for 2 months; I am down to 195 and 13% body fat – a noticeable change and my stamina has increased by leaps and bounds. If you want a product that works, is compact, and demands you to push yourself; then I fully back and endorse the Body by Jake Tower 200."Justin – Fort Bragg, NC"The Tower 200 is the best, most affordable piece of workout equipment I ever bought, and that’s saying a lot because I invested in all kinds of fitness equipment. I'm the army and I also travel a lot, so the Tower 200 is so convenient for me to use – when I get off work I get right on the Tower 200 and go to work. I used to plan hotel stays around being close to a gym but now I don’t worry bout that cuz I pack my Tower 200 in my trunk and set it up in the hotel and never lose a work out day….I love the Tower 200 and it goes wherever I go and that’s real talk."
